Screen Scene Thursday: ‘Southpaw’

Sam Vander Forest

Jake Gyllenhaal and Kurt Sutter have been having a phenomenal past few years, and one of those names may be familiar to you, but the other may not be. Gyllenhaal, as you may know, has been the star of films such as “Donnie Darko,” “Zodiac” and the 2014 thriller “Nightcrawler.” Sutter, however, is a behind-the-scenes man mostly. Sutter started as a writer/director on the FX show “The Shield” and was later the creator and genius behind the monumental show, “Sons of Anarchy,” returning to FX. The two powerhouse names have come together now for a boxing film for this generation, and it looks like they pulled out all the stops.

“Southpaw” centers around Billy Hope, a boxer who seems to have it all, but quickly finds his life is falling apart around him. After a personal tragedy, his life begins to crumble and like most sports movies, he has to fight his way back to the top the only way he knows how. It essentially looks like a grittier, darker “Rocky,” and judging by Sutter’s past work as a writer, it’s going to be nothing short of jaw dropping.

The director, Antoine Fuqua, has worked on action films his whole career, including such titles as “The Equalizer,” “Training Day,” “Shooter” and even “King Arthur.”

The impressive part of this film is the transformation that Gyllenhaal put himself through. To star in “Nightcrawler” he had to lose 25 pounds, and for “Southpaw” he regained that lost weight and added 15 pounds. The commitment to altering his body is up there with Matthew MConaughey’s figure change from “Magic Mike” to “Dallas Buyer’s Club.”

“Southpaw” also stars Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker and Naomie Harris, and it hits theaters on July 24. Check out the trailer below.
