An old golf adage says that you can’t win a tournament in the first round, but you can lose it.

Though No. 34 Iowa State is in third place out of nine teams at the Big 12 Championship after its round of two-over-par 290, the Cyclones are within shouting distance of the lead, held by No. 26 Baylor at 282.

Iowa State trails second place, No. 37 Texas Tech, by only one shot.

On the day, Iowa State was led by its senior leader, Chonlada Chayanun. With a round of one-under-par 71, Chayanun is tied for sixth place out of 45 golfers. She trails leader Pornpiva Sakdee of Kansas by three shots.

Freshmen Celia Barquin and Nattapan Siritrai, and junior Cajsa Persson are all part of a group of 10 golfers tied for 11th place after rounds of 73. Freshman M.J. Kamin posted a round of 79 and is tied for 40th place. Her score was not considered for team scoring.

The second of three rounds is set for April 25 beginning at 8 a.m. Iowa State will be grouped with Texas Tech and Baylor. They will begin play at 10 a.m. from The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.
