iCan Bike program coming to Ames

Claire Norton

ISU kinesiology student Katie Cook brought the iCan Bike five-day camp to Ames, as she thought there would be great benefit from it.

Those with special needs are able to develop the skills to ride a bike on their own in order to gain independence and confidence in their everyday life with this program.

According to its parent organization’s website, iCanShine.org, ages 8 to 88 are able to participate in this great opportunity.

Not only are there bike camps across the country, but also after-school bike programs that are offered, as well as a swimming program, iCan Swim, that is forecasted to start up in the near future.

These campers work with the trained volunteers and use reconstructed bikes to enhance:

• balance

• bike-riding skills

• independence

• overall fitness

• confidence

This camp is June 1 through 5 and an informational meeting for volunteers and parents of the campers will be May 31.
