Spring clean your closet

Anna Chandler

There’s nothing like a hint of beautiful weather to make you never want to wear your winter clothes again. As spring rolls around, we’re all dying to buy everything on our spring wish lists to keep up with trends, but given the look of our closets something else might need to be done first. Since most college students cannot afford a TLC makeover, there are a few other tips and tricks that can help get the job done.

The thought of cleaning the closet seems fun, until the time comes when you’re standing in front of a pile of clothes taller than you. At this point, the hardest part is getting started. Begin by dumping it all out, separating and prioritizing each piece you pass by.

What have you worn in the past year? If there’s an item that hasn’t seen the light of day in quite some time, consider letting it go. If that seems a little too strenuous, put it in a bag, hide it and see if you notice the disappearance after awhile. If it finds its way back into your closet, it was meant to be. If not, say goodbye then and there.

Separate unwanted items into three piles. Trash, sell and Goodwill. As easy as it is to just throw something away, consider donating it to someone in need or making a few dollars on the item.

Another idea is the hanger trick. While organizing your closet, turn all of the clothes hangers so they face the same direction. When you wear an item, turn the hanger to face the opposite direction. After some time, take a moment to see what items are still facing the old way, and make a decision on whether to keep or get ride of them.

Head to the store and invest in some closet must-haves. Slim velvet hangers, shoe organizers and extra shelves will allow for a cleaner space and you might even be able to see everything you own a little bit easier. Make some room for those spring pieces in your already overflowing closet and have fun while doing it!
