Screen Scene Thursday: ‘Independence Day 2’

The 1996 Sci-Fi classic “Independence Day” will be returning to the big screen in June 2016, and some big news regarding the film has been dropped.

Many originally questioned whether stars Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum would return in lead roles like they did in the original, but it turns out only Goldblum will reprise his role. Big news came at the same time as the announcement of Goldblum and it includes one of the Hemsworth brothers.

Liam Hemsworth will be joining the cast of the sequel, as was announced by director Roland Emmerich on Twitter. Liam Hemsworth has really made a name for himself as a star in the “Hunger Games” series and it will be interesting to see who his character is in the film.

Although Smith may not be in it, you may remember that his character did have a young son and it looks like that is whom the sequel will be centered on.

Jessie Usher was cast as the son of Will Smith’s character, Captain Steven Hiller and without Smith in the cast, how will they write out his character? Jessie Usher got his first major role in the recent sports film “When The Game Stands Tall” and is now starring in the Lebron James-produced Starz show “Survivor’s Remorse.”

With these announcements rolling in, there are still various questions left unanswered. First, will Bill Pullman return in some way? Although it’d be impossible to write him in as president again, he did give one of the coolest motivational speeches ever. And lastly, why is the film being released in late June rather than July 4th? It seems like low-hanging fruit that they missed.
