A house fire at 2932 Somerset Dr. in Ames was under control about 2 p.m. Thursday after the Ames Fire Department responded to the call an hour earlier.

Deputy Fire Chief Richard Higgins said he believes the blaze originated in the attached garage. The three family members inside the home when the fire started evacuated immediately and suffered no injuries.

The bulk of the house avoided fire damage, but Higgins said the house was damaged by smoke from the garage.

“There was a heavy fire on the front side of the garage when we arrived,” Higgins said.

Higgins said the Ames Fire Department did not yet know the cause of the fire, but was in the preliminary stages of its investigation.

Homeowner John Stafford said he was just happy no one was hurt in the incident. He was even able to bring a bit of levity to the situation.

“I guess I won’t have to clean out the attic anymore,” he said.
