Cyclones seize win against Sun Devils

In the first dual of the weekend, No. 8 Iowa State was able to defeat visiting Arizona State 27-6.

The action started at 157 pounds, but it turned out to be a slow start for Iowa State (9-2, 2-1 Big 12), as senior Luke Goettl lost by decision. With the Cyclones down 3-0 after the first match, All-American Mike Moreno made up the deficit with a 12-4 major decision at 165 pounds. 

With Iowa State up 4-3 after two matches, Tanner Weatherman put in a strong effort late in his match at 174 to win 11-7. At 184 pounds, Lelund Weatherspoon lost by 4-2 decsion to No. 4 Blake Stauffer, Weatherspoon’s first loss in 2015. 

No. 2 Kyven Gadson put Iowa State back on track with an 11-7 decision and heavyweight Quean Smith followed suit with a 6-3 decision victory. With the lightweights up, Kyle Larson scored a close 2-1 decision, fending off a late takedown attempt in the waning seconds. 

Earl Hall cemented the ISU victory at 133 pounds with a 17-2 technical fall. Hall, ranked No. 2 in some polls, has yet to lose in 2015. Dante Rodriguez upped the point total at 141 pounds, winning another high-scoring match by a 12-10 decision. 

The dual was sealed for Iowa State, but Gabe Moreno still had a match with No. 9 Christian Pagdilao. Gabe was able to hang on against Pagdilao for a close 9-8 decision. 

Iowa State welcomes Northern Iowa to Hilton at 2 p.m. Feb. 15.
