Nikki Moody, Amber Battle highlight ISU/TTU matchup

When the Cyclones and Red Raiders meet up in Lubbock, Texas on Feb. 11, all eyes will be on the battle that will ensure between two of the top guards in the Big 12.

Nikki Moody might be playing as well as she ever has in a Cyclone uniform, as the senior has scored 44 points and dropped 15 dimes in her last two games.

Amber Battle of Texas Tech is no slouch herself, as she has shown the ability to put up points in recent weeks. Against West Virginia, Battle poured in 33 points.

While all eyes might be focused on the two, they may not even be focused on one another.

With no truly capable backup point guard available for Iowa State because of Jadda Buckley’s injury, the team might employ a defensive strategy to ensure Moody doesn’t get herself into foul trouble.

Moody had a slight history of foul trouble earlier in the season. In the Iowa State’s last game against West Virginia, ISU coach Bill Fennelly employed a box-and-one like strategy, with Nicole “Kidd” Blaskowsky guarding West Virginia’s best perimeter player.

That way, Moody avoided foul issues and was able to save up some extra energy to expend on the offensive end of the court. Given Blaskowsky’s defensive success in their last game and Moody’s offensive success, the Cyclones might try to employ a similar strategy against Texas Tech to hold Battle in check.
