Roberts impressive in freshman campaign

Freshman swimmer Kasey Roberts’ individual success for ISU swimming and diving hasn’t gone unnoticed. If it had, looking at the school-record book and season statistics would be enough to catch anyone’s attention.

Roberts has had an instant impact for the ISU swimming program. Following some adjustments to her technique in the transition from high school to collegiate swimming, Roberts has been nothing but a point scorer for her team.

Roberts has leading times for Iowa State in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, as well as the 200-yard individual medley. Roberts is also a part of Iowa State’s top 200 and 400-yard medley relay teams.

In addition to her top team times, Roberts has times that are second on the team in the 400 IM, fourth in 200-yard backstroke, fifth in 100-yard backstroke and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle. And that only covers her success this season.

Roberts has already compiled six top-20 all-time records for Iowa State in addition to where she sits atop the team in the three various categories. The numbers don’t lie and the feeling is satisfying for Roberts.

“It’s really fun,” Roberts said. “It’s fun to be able to see my times and see how consistent they are, and really enjoy the season and enjoy every meet.”

The gratification of seeing the times is one level of success, but remaining humble and going about daily business is an entirely separate task. Coach Kelly Nordell has been at the edge of the pool witnessing Roberts’ outstanding freshman season and acknowledges Roberts’ qualities as a person and a swimmer.

“It’s obviously exciting,” Nordell said. “She’s loaded with talent. She’s very humble. She’s youthful and I think she is naïve to her abilities, but her competitive spirit is just outstanding.”

Roberts had a lot of success in high school and has carried that with her to the collegiate level, but her confidence and understanding weren’t with her right away at Iowa State. Coach Sorenson mentioned some major changes that were made to Roberts’ top event, the breaststroke.

Early in the season, these major changes were implemented. It took Roberts a while to adjust, but as the season progressed, Roberts regained her confidence and winning ways.

Coach Sorenson saw a 14-year-old Roberts in Minnesota back when he was recruiting some of this year’s senior class.

“I saw Kasey [Roberts] swim then and I knew, okay this kid is going to be really good,” Sorenson said. “It was just going to be a matter of time. I knew she had this great potential.”

That great potential has turned into a decorated season for Roberts. Along with all of her team-leading and school-record times, Roberts has been a part of a highly successful team season for the Cyclones.

The success is not complete, however. Roberts and the Cyclones have shifted focus to the Big 12 Championship and the excitement that comes with the peak meet of the season.

Roberts projects to finish in the top two or three in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, which is right where Roberts and the Cyclones are striving to be.

Roberts’ freshman season pushes into the final stretch as she continues to pave her way through the record books in her first campaign at Iowa State.

“There’s always room for improvement and always room to get better,” Roberts said. “Coming in and having a great season has a weight off my shoulders and I’m looking forward to the next couple years.”
