How to Plan an Acting Career

Peter Story is a performer who has been on shows such as “CSI,” “Ugly Betty” and “Without A Trace.” He is also a story teller for “The Moth.” Currently, he is on a tour for the performance based off of a book called “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus.” Having experience in acting, he talks about what has helped him become an actor and how other future performers should view the acting world.

Be Active

“I recommend that they get in the field immediately,” Story said.

He thinks it’s great to be involved in college as an actor because it’s like a small community. The real world is more competitive, though. Going to the more competitive places in the United States is the best choice for a job, since auditions will consistently be held.

Narrow Down Your Options

“They should figure out what they want to focus on, whether that be musicals, improv, TV, web series …” Story said.

College should help a student narrow down what they are interested in — choosing what they want to focus on and where they should live.

Places To Live

“Improv is in any major city like New York, L.A. or Chicago. Film would be in L.A. Plays and musicals would be in New York. Web series can be anywhere,” Story said.

Depending on how much a person wants to be paid can determine where they want to live. Getting as much experience will help a performer in the long run, but they have to find where their talents fit in.
