ISU wrestling downs No. 6 Virginia Tech

Earlier in the week, ISU wrestling coach Kevin Jackson said he thought the Beauty and the Beast event usually works in his team’s favor.

He wasn’t kidding.

Iowa State defeated No. 6 Virginia Tech on Jan. 18 by a score of 21-12, scoring bonus points in three matches along the way.

John Meeks started the dual at 141 pounds, getting the nod over Dante Rodriguez, but Meeks’ effort against No. 3 Devin Carter was not enough, as he lost a 9-8 decision. Virginia Tech scored another decision at 149 pounds as Gabe Moreno lost 9-3.

Then Luke Goettl got the ball rolling at 157 pounds. Goettl scored an 11-1 major decision, followed by a 9-1 major decision win for All-American Michael Moreno at 165 pounds. It was all Iowa State for the next three matches, as Tanner Weatherman got a decision in the waning seconds of the 174-pound match, followed by an overtime win for Lelund Weatherspoon.

Kyven Gadson rolled out the third major decision of the afternoon before Virginia Tech won the 285 and 125 pound matches. The score was 18-12 Iowa State when All-American Earl Hall took the mat. Hall would not disappoint, as he secured a 7-3 win and 21-12 dual win, Iowa State’s first win against a top ten team since Jan. 31, 2010.
