Gadson suffers first loss of season, Cyclones 15th place after day one of Southern Scuffle

The biggest headline from day one of the Southern Scuffle was not a positive one for the Cyclones.

With starters Michael Moreno and Lelund Weatherspoon resting with minor injuries, most of the attention turned to Kyven Gadson and a potential rematch with reigning national champion J’Den Cox.

The two squared off in last year’s Scuffle, which saw Gadson come out victorious against the eventual national champ.

The two came in with identical 14-0 records. The stage was set for a major matchup at one of college wrestling’s toughest tournaments.

However, the chances of the rematch happening took a hit when Gadson was upset by unranked Spencer Johnson of Nebraska in the third round of the tournament.

Cox will be competing in the quarterfinal stage tomorrow and Gadson is still alive on the back end of the bracket.

While Gadson fell short of the quarterfinals, Gabe Moreno, Earl Hall and Tanner Weatherman all cemented their spots in tomorrow’s quarterfinals.

Moreno went 3-0 on the day, including a major decision and a fall. Both Hall and Weatherman went 2-0 with a pair of decisions to get into the quarterfinals.

Still alive on the back side of their respective brackets for the Cyclones are Gadson, Kyle Larson, Marcus Harrington, Joe Scanlan and Quean Smith.

As a team, the Cyclones are currently sitting in 15th place after day one of the Scuffle with a team score of 22. Penn State is leading the 32-team field with a total team score of 52.

Action from the Southern Scuffle will resume tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT.
