Five takeaways from Tucson for ISU men’s golf

ISU men’s golf is ranked No. 43/44, according to Golfweek/Golfstat.

The team began its season at the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz. The Cyclones finished in fifth place out of 15 teams, but squandered a chance at an individual title by posting a final round total of eight-over-par 292. Here are five takeaways from the Iowa State’s debut:

– Iowa State’s two medalist winners from the fall portion of the season, Scott Fernandez and Nick Voke, were the leaders for Iowa State this week. Fernandez tied for sixth and Voke tied for 18th.

– No. 29/25 Arizona State cruised to an 11-shot victory, even without standout Jon Rahm, who is third in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Rahm was absent and is set to compete at the Waste Management Phoenix Open on Jan. 28 via a sponsor exemption.

– Iowa State improved its comparative record to 35-12-2, though before the Arizona Intercollegiate, its schedule was ranked No. 93 by Golfweek.

– Iowa State’s fifth starting spot has been in flux for several tournaments. This week, Jack Carter got the nod in place of Collin Foster, who started all three fall tournaments. Carter had the worst finish of the team in tying for 71st, though he was able to contribute an even-par 71 to the team’s score in the second round.

– All five ISU starters posted individual rounds of par or better, but were unable to find consistency. With the exception of Fernandez, whose highest round was a one-over-par 72, the other four starters each had at least one round of 75 or higher.
