Men’s golf three shots off the lead after day one in Arizona

Mike Randleman

With one day to go at the Arizona Intercollegiate, the ISU men’s golf team is within reach of individual and team titles.

A few finishing holes are left to be completed after play was suspended in round two due to darkness on Jan. 26. With a little over 18 holes to go, No. 43/44 Iowa State (Golfweek/Golfstat) is in second place at two-under-par after a five-under-par effort in the second round when play was completed.

Leader No. 29/25 Arizona State is the pace-setter with a two-round total of five-under-par 563 (286+277).

For the Cyclones, sophomore Nick Voke and senior Scott Fernandez are both in a tie for fourth place in the individual race.

At three-under-par, Voke (70+69) and Fernandez (71+three-under-par thru 17) trail Arizona State’s Max Rotluff by four shots.

Voke and Fernandez are no strangers to title contention, as both players earned medalist honors in the fall portion of the season.

Immediately trailing Arizona State and Iowa State are Texas-El Paso (one-over-par), New Mexico (two-over-par) and Arizona (four-over-par).

The tournament will be completed beginning at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 27 from Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.
