4 players to watch in volleyball’s matchup at Oklahoma

RPI No. 18 Iowa State (13-9, 5-6 Big 12) will look to win its third match in a row when it travels to No. 24 Oklahoma (17-7, 8-3 Big 12) on Nov. 12. The Cyclones defeated the Sooners in the first matchup exactly one month ago on Oct. 12 at Hilton Coliseum, 3-1. Here are four players to watch in the second matchup:

Oklahoma

1. Junior outside hitter Kierra Holst

Oklahoma leads the Big 12 with 1.50 service aces per set, an attack led by individual Big 12 service aces leader Kierra Holst who averages 0.51 service aces per set. In the two team’s first matchup, Holst matched her season average with two aces in two sets. She also notched 14 kills, the second most of the Sooners.

2. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Madison Ward

Ward led the Sooners in kills [14] and was second in hitting percentage [.319] in the Oct. 12 matchup versus the Cyclones. She is fifth in the Big 12 with 3.16 kills per set, joining Holst who is fourth with 3.50 per set.

Iowa State

1. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Morgan Kuhrt

Morgan Kuhrt’s role in the Iowa State offensive attack has continued to increase as the season has gone on. Her performance in the first matchup against Oklahoma was one of her best as she led her team with a career-high 21 kills.

2. Freshman setter Monique Harris

Since making the adjustment to a 6-2 offense three matches ago versus Texas, Monique Harris’ role in the lineup has skyrocketed as a second setter alongside regular starter Suzanne Horner. In her previous two matches, Harris has led the team with 21.5 assists and has also posted 8.5 digs in her expanded role. Wednesday’s match will be her second road match as a starter.
