Cyclones top finishers at Harold Nichols Open

Wrestling at 285 pounds, redshirt junior Tyler Swope works to gain control of his University of Nebraska Kearney opponent Luke Petersen. Swope picked up a win in the first round of the Cyclone Open on Nov. 8 with a score of 5-4.

With most of ISU wrestling’s headliners sitting out, the backups and freshmen athletes got a chance to shine at the Harold Nichols Open this past weekend. Here are the results of the top finishers for the Cyclones:

Nathan Boston, second place at 125 

Boston recorded a tech fall, a pin, an 8-3 decision and a 3-2 decision on his way to the finals where he lost a 5-1 decision.

Dante Rodriguez, second place at 141

Rodriguez had a first round bye before pinning his way into the finals. Rodriguez pinned four straight opponents and nearly pinned his opponent in finals, before suffering an 8-7 loss. 

Daniel Woiwor, third at 157

Woiwor won by a pin, a decision, and a major decision before suffering semifinal round. He bounced back with a pin and a 4-2 decision to take third place.

Marcus Harrington, third at 197

Harrington won by two decisions before a 2-1 loss sent him to the consolation brackets. In the consolation bracket, he won by a medical forfeit and a pin in the third place match.

Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer, fifth at 149

Rodriguez-Spencer recorded two wins by decision and two wins by major decision before falling 12-0 in the semifinal round. He then lost 4-3 in the consolation bracket and won the fifth place match by medical forfeit.

Tyler Swope, sixth at 285

Swope won by a decision and two pins before getting pinned in the semifinal round. In the consolation bracket, Swope lost by medical forfeit twice, settling for sixth place.
