Barquin finishes near top in Texas, ISU women’s golf takes seventh

For the second straight week, a freshman has led the ISU women’s golf team.

After Nattapan Siritrai posted the best freshman result since 2011 by finishing in third placeon Oct. 7 at the Windy City Collegiate Classic. Celia Barquin matched Siritrai by tying for third on Oct. 14 at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational.

Barquin posted her career-best finish of her young career, which led the Cyclones to a seventh-place finish out of 15 teams.

By posting rounds of 74, 73 and 71, Barquin finished at two-over-par, four shots behind individual champion, Hayley Davis of Baylor.

As a team, Iowa State posted a 44-over-par total of 908 (291+323+294) to finish 13 shots behind champion Nevada-Las Vegas.

In the first round, Chonlada Chayanun posted a 65 to set the school record for lowest 18-hole score. The record was previously 67, set by Punpaka Phuntumabamrung in 2009.

Chayanun went on to finish in a tie for 14th place.

By going 8-6 against the field against the field, Iowa State’s comparative record for the season improved to 26-19 on the season through three tournaments.

The team’s final event of the fall season, the Stanford Intercollegiate, will begin on Oct. 17.
