ISU volleyball claims season’s first win in Iowa State Challenge
September 4, 2014
The ISU volleyball team fixed its course Sept. 4, bouncing back from two consecutive losses in the AVCA Showcase to claim a straight-set victory against Omaha in the opening match of the Iowa State Challenge.
The Cyclones came out with a youthful look against the Mavericks, starting freshman Branen Berta in place of senior Victoria Hurtt.
Berta played alongside freshman Alexis Conaway while redshirt freshman Samara West was the first ISU substitution of the evening.
Iowa State dominated the stat sheet, out-killing Omaha 43 to 30 and boasting a hitting percentage of .385 to Omaha’s .123.
Iowa State also passed the ball more effectively than its opponent, tallying 42 assists to Omaha’s 27. Sophomore setter Suzanne Horner led the way for the Cyclones in that department with 36.
Junior Caitlin Nolan, who claimed Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors last week, followed up her effort in the ACVA Showcase with 17 digs against Omaha, playing the role of defensive stopper for Iowa State.
The Cyclones look to start a winning streak when they take on the Tennessee Volunteers at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at Hilton Coliseum.
