Know Big Names Before the Big Days

Starting Sept. 23rd, Iowa State’s string of career fairs will begin, and knowing which companies to look for can make the process easier.
ISU is gearing up for four career fairs this fall. They include Engineers’ Week Career Fair; Business, Industry and Technology Fall Career Fair and Fall People to People Career Fair.
The first, Engineers’ Week, is scheduled to start on Sept. 23 from noon to 6 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum and Scheman Building.
Roger Bentley, manager, Student/Alumni Career Management Programs, Engineering Career Services, said the Engineers’ Week Career Fair is slotted to include over 340 companies at the six-hour event.
The Business, Industry and Technology Fall Career Fair is scheduled for Sept. 24 from noon to 6 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. The College of Business also supplies a list of employers attending the career fair on their career services website, and the list features over 170 companies.
The 2014 Fall People to People Career Fair overlaps with the Business, Industry and Technology Fall Career Fair, and Taren Crow, director, Liberal Arts and Sciences Career Services, said there’s a reason for that.
With the People to People Career Fair on Sept. 24 from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Scheman Building, students can attend both career fairs easily.
“All career fairs are open to all majors,” Crow said. “It’s really good to get into that environment.”
By taking time to look at companies’ corporate missions, values, and position openings, students can prepare themselves to have meaningful conversations with potential employers, Bentley added. This can also impress the recruiters who are on their feet all day, that may be giving the same speech many times.
“Basic research can really help a student,” Bentley said. “It can get repetitious. If they don’t have to do that, it’s refreshing for them.”
Crow added that looking into a company’s social media profiles can also give an edge for what they have been working on, and can familiarize students with the organization.
“It can give you the opportunity to ask some intelligent questions,” Crow said.
