Derek Jeter: Hero outside of baseball

Peter O'Brien

This past weekend, Derek Jeter’s career in baseball with the New York Yankees came to an end. However, as we look at all of his accomplishments on the baseball field, we must never lose sight of how he is involved outside of baseball.

In 1996, Jeter started the Turn 2 Foundation. Jeter started this foundation to help children and teenagers avoid drug addiction by getting involved in activities and engaging in a healthy lifestyle. Since 1996, the Foundation has awarded more than $19 million in grants to help youths engage in healthy lifestyles as opposed to drug and alcohol addiction.

In addition to the Turn 2 Foundation, Jeter is also in charge of a program called Jeter’s Leaders. This program is funded by the Turn 2 Foundation and is aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and academic achievement. This leadership development program builds leaders out of high school students that not only helps them individually grow in areas like academic achievement and healthy lifestyles, but these students also serve as a positive role model to their younger peers to promote a lifestyle away from drugs and alcohol.

Both of these programs are focused on staying away from a life centered around drug and alcohol addiction. Derek Jeter is mostly recognized as being a hero on the baseball field, but little do fans know about all of the philanthropic work he is involved in. Being a national icon, Jeter has always been a class act and those leadership principles are those that he promotes in all of his programs for young adults.
