Big 12 power rankings: Week four
September 15, 2014
1. Oklahoma | (3-0, 0-0) | [–]
The Sooners remain at the top after a 34-10 win against the Tennessee Volunteers. Oklahoma’s defense is no joke, currently ranked eighth in the nation in scoring defense, just allowing 11 points per game.
2. Baylor | (2-0, 0-0) | [–]
Baylor’s offense is the best in the nation, but with its first three opponents combining to go 2-6 to start the season, the Bears have yet to really impress anyone. The Bears allowed 21 points to Buffalo, a Mid-American Conference team, in their first test on the road — an area where they struggled last season.
3. Kansas State | (2-0, 1-0) | [–]
The Wildcats were off in week three but are preparing for a showdown Sept. 18 with No. 5 Auburn in Manhattan, Kan. A lot will be learned about the team’s national standing in one of the most high-profile Big 12 non-conference games of the young 2014 season.
4. Oklahoma State | (2-1, 0-0) | [–]
A 43-13 dismantling of University of Texas at San Antonio was good enough to push the Cowboys into the Associated Press top 25, and their week one battle with Alabama looks like no fluke. With quarterback J.W. Walsh injured, Daxx Garman has stepped in without a hiccup. If both quarterbacks are healthy, there are two good options to start.
5. West Virginia | (2-1, 0-0) | [–]
In the first of what would be two field goal-winning Big 12 nonconference games, West Virginia knocked off Maryland 40-37 in week three. The Mountaineer offense looked potent through much of the first half, but special teams miscues and spotty defense nearly lost it the game. Maryland isn’t expected to do much in the struggling Big Ten conference, but a thrilling win over the Terrapins can only be positive going forward.
6. Texas Christian | (2-0, 0-0) | [–]
TCU showed for the second game in a row that last season’s offensive struggles may be a thing of the past, taking down Minnesota 30-7. The defense played just as well, only allowing a fourth quarter touchdown to the Gophers. With a struggling Southern Methodist University next on the plate, the Horned Frogs have another week to show off.
7. Texas | (1-2, 0-0) | [–]
The Longhorns could be looking at a 2-1 record with a win over No. 11 UCLA. That is had they not elected to kickoff to the Bruins to start both halves. A miscommunication on the coin toss has the Longhorns wondering “What if?” after an otherwise impressive display in week three.
8. Iowa State | (1-2, 0-1) | [+1]
ISU fans should use caution as the team comes off a win over in-state rival Iowa. While the team has shown vast improvement since week one, the Hawkeyes are likely the worst of the three opponents they’ve faced. Regardless, the last-second win gives a huge boost to a team heading into a bye week.
9. Texas Tech | (2-1, 0-0) | [-1]
After struggling to pull out wins against Central Arkansas and University of Texas at El Paso, the Red Raiders got run over 49-28 at home against an Arkansas team projected to finish at the bottom of the Southeastern Conference. Neither of Texas Tech’s wins are more impressive than Iowa State’s win over Iowa and being dominated at home by a team that finished 3-9 last season only hurts the Red Raiders.
10. Kansas | (1-1, 0-0) | [–]
The Jayhawks allowed 331 rushing yards and only managed a field goal in the team’s 41-3 loss to Duke. The defense let running back Shaun Wilson run all over them, finishing with 245 yards on just 12 carries. Kansas quarterback Montell Cozart finished with 89 yards and two interceptions, and the Jayhawks seem to be in for another long year.
