Rocky start puts ISU women’s golf in 11th place after day one in New Mexico
September 15, 2014
By starting three freshmen, some inconsistency is to be expected for the ISU women’s golf team this season.
An exemplary exception came Sept. 15 at the Dick McGuire/Branch Law Firm Invitational.
After the first round, Iowa State found itself in last place out of 16 teams with a 23-over-par total of 315. All five starters failed to break par and three starters — Chonlada Chayanun, M.J. Kamin and New Siritrai — failed to break 80.
The second round, before being suspended by inclement weather, showed a complete turnaround. After 12 to 15 holes, depending on the player’s point on the course, the team score was one-over par, a 22-shot improvement. All five starters were on pace to match or best their first round score and the Cyclones vaulted from 16th to 11th place.
Leading the ISU charge on Monday was freshman Celia Barquin. Barquin posted a team-best round of one-over-par 74 in the first round and was also one-over-par through 15 holes in round two. At two-over-par for the tournament, she is tied for 18th place and eight shots off of the individual lead held by Suc Tangkamolprasert of Northwestern and Dana Finkelstein of UNLV.
Following behind Barquín are the team’s lone upperclassmen, junior Cajsa Persson and senior Chonlada Chayanun.
Both are tied for 30th place at five-over-par for the tournament.
Chayanun was a late decision to play after suffering from tendinitis in the summer. In her first competitive round since the injury, Chayanun got off to a rough start, posting an eight-over-par round of 81.
Like the rest of her teammates, though, she rebounded in the second round to post a three-under-par mark through 15 holes, which is tied for the lowest round in round two.
Persson, who has recorded two top-ten finishes at this event in the past, bounced pack from a five-over-par 78 and is at even-par through 12 holes in round two. She currently sits five shots out of the top 10.
Rounding out the starting lineup are the second and third of Iowa State’s freshman trio.
M.J. Kamin shot a nine-over-par 82 in round one and was six-over-par through 15 holes in round two for a 15-over-par total, good for a tie for 80th place out of 93 golfers.
Tied with Kamin is New Siritrai, who posted a 12-over-par 85 in round one and is at three-over-par through 15 holes in round two.
Iowa State stands 29 shots behind first-place Northwestern and one shot behind 10th-place BYU.
Play will resume from the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at 7:45 a.m. Sept. 16 with the third and final round taking place immediately after the completion of round two.
