No judgment, no excuses

Access to exercise equipment and facilities is easy at Iowa State with two exercise facilities, the newest being State Gym, which reopened last year.

On a typical day, you will see runners enjoying the beautiful scenery around campus or students heading toward the gym to get some form of exercise such as cardio, lifting or yoga.

However, there are still quite a few people contemplating about changing their fitness routine but afraid to do so out of nervousness or fear of what other people will think of them.

For those who are a little scared, there are plenty of ways to get started exercising without feeling nervous. Here are two ways to get started:

1. If you aren’t familiar with exercise, do some research. There are plenty of websites complete with different exercise routines and tips for working out.

“I would feel more comfortable if I went to the gym with someone who I know and who knows what they are doing,” said Jessica Schaumburg, sophomore in food science.

Exercising with someone who is knowledgeable about exercise makes it easier on someone who may not be very familiar. Iowa State also offers personal trainers to help those who want to improve their fitness potential.

2. Go at a time when the gym isn’t that busy and full of people.

“Being a transfer student I went in and familiarized myself with where everything was at the gym, so I can get through my workout swiftly,” said Laura Francois, junior in kinesiology and health.

Most importantly, if you are willing to change yourself, that is all that should matter to you, not what other people think of you. Everyone is at the gym to better themselves, so no one is going to judge you for doing your own exercise routine.

“You have to go in with confidence. Do it for yourself and not for others,” said Samantha Larson, freshman in kinesiology. “Becoming a better you is the only thing you should be worried about when you are at the gym.”
