Big 12 power rankings: Week three
September 9, 2014
1. Oklahoma | (2-0, 0-0) | [–]
The Sooners embarrassed Tulsa on their home field, beating them 52-7 and didn’t appear to have many areas of concern. Until there is evidence of that, they will be at the top of the conference.
2. Baylor | (2-0, 0-0) | [–]
The Bears outscored their first two opponents 115-6, but Southern Methodist and Northwestern State are two of the worst teams in the nation. It will take a wins over better schools to move ahead of Oklahoma.
3. Kansas State | (2-0, 1-0) | [–]
Iowa State gave the Wildcats a scare on the road, but they showed resiliency after coming back from a 28-13 deficit. Bill Snyder has his teams hard-wired to win and this year isn’t any different.
4. Oklahoma State | (1-1, 0-0) | [+1]
After taking No. 1 Florida State down to the wire, the Cowboys took care of business against Missouri State and the 40-23 final score wasn’t as close as it looks.
5. West Virginia | (1-1, 0-0) | [+2]
Towson was overmatched by quarterback Clint Trickett and the Mountaineers 54-0 as Trickett completed 35-of-40 passes en route to a 348-yard passing game. After hanging with No. 2 Alabama longer than most expected in week one, the Mountaineers make the jump to No. 5.
6. Texas Christian | (1-0, 0-0) | [–]
The Horned Frogs had a week off after handling Sanford in week one.
7. Texas | (1-1, 0-0) | [-2]
BYU embarrassed the Longhorns for the second season in a row and quarterback Tyrone Swoopes had a less-than-stellar debut as David Ash’s replacement. The BYU loss didn’t derail their season last year, but they will need to find consistency at the quarterback position to prevent it this year.
8. Texas Tech | (2-0, 0-0) | [-1]
Don’t let the 2-0 record fool you — the Red Raiders are holding on by a thread. FCS Central Arkansas nearly knocked off TTU in week one and a late touchdown saved the Red Raiders from a loss to UTEP. With the level of competition heating up, we will learn a lot about this Texas Tech team.
9. Iowa State | (0-2, 0-1) | [+1]
Despite the loss to Kansas State, the Cyclones showed they were a much improved team from week one and if they play like they did against the Wildcats, they will find themselves in the win column.
10. Kansas | (1-0, 0-0) | [-1]
In very few instances does a 1-0 team get ranked behind an 0-2 team, but with the Jayhawks nearly blowing a 34-7 fourth quarter lead over a team that finished 3-9 in one of the worst conferences in college football last year, it’s hard to believe they will be competitive in the Big 12.
