We are writing in enthusiastic support of the proposed Healthy Life Center.

The community-centered facility will benefit the well-being of Story County residents of all ages by providing a wide range of programs and services under one roof. The Center will serve as a venue for socializing, exercising (including year-round swimming), physical rehabilitation and classes on topics such as healthful eating and healthy living.

As the current and former deans of Iowa State University’s College of Human Sciences, we both understand and appreciate the value of the city-university/college connections that will be enabled by completion of the Healthy Life Center.

For example, Des Moines Area Community College and Iowa State are poised to offer education and applied student learning experiences, especially in the in the fields of athletic training; child, adult and family services; culinary sciences; dietetics/nutrition; early childhood and elementary education; event management; food science; kinesiology and health; and nursing. Students studying in these fields can participate in hands-on experiences at the Center to further their education, while also benefitting the community.

We envision the focus on wellness will contribute to a healthier local population, stemming the obesity epidemic and its associated risks for many serious diseases and health conditions.

Please join us in supporting this timely, unique, and much-needed community wellness center!
