YMCA Capital City League prepares for playoffs
July 10, 2014
The YMCA Capital City League playoffs are about to begin as the summer league winds down.
The first playoff round July 11 will look almost identical to the final night of regular season play July 9, as multiple rematches are in store for the fans and players.
Adio Chiropractic and Walnut Creek YMCA squared off July 9 in a matchup that pitted the league’s two best teams against each other.
The game did not disappoint as Adio, led by ISU sophomore guards Matt Thomas and Monte Morris, eked out a 123-122 victory over Walnut Creek.
Thomas racked up 44 points to complement 11 rebounds and six assists, while his backcourt counterpart Morris dropped in 31 points to go along with six boards and six assists.
Redshirt junior Jameel McKay led the way for Walnut Creek with a dominant stat line, highlighted by 43 points and 19 rebounds. Sophomore transfer Hallice Cooke connected on four 3-point shots on his way to 29 points and nine rebounds, but Walnut Creek fell one bucket short.
Despite the loss, Walnut Creek finished 6-2, the same league record as Adio, and both teams earned automatic byes into the semifinals.
The four ISU players on Adio and Walnut Creek will not sit out the totality of July 11’s playoff round, however, as the league will be presenting a 3-point shooting contest and a dunk contest instead of a third game and it will begin at 5:30 p.m., preceding the initial playoff contests.
The other two games July 9 saw Phoenix Renewable Resources take on Renaissance Granite & Quartz, and Capital Orthopedics & Sports Medicine go head-to head with the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Atlantic.
Due to the playoff seeding, both of these matchups served as literal previews for July 11’s first round, as each of the four teams will take on the same opponent in the single-elimination playoff format that begins July 11.
Coca-Cola edged out Capital Orthopedics July 9 by a score of 143-139 on the back of senior Dustin Hogue’s 34 points and 13 rebounds.
Redshirt sophomore Sherron Dorsey-Walker added 37 points of his own to help propel Coca-Cola to a narrow victory despite ISU freshman Clayton Custer eight-of-12 3s on his way to 52 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.
Phoenix defeated Granite in a relatively close contest, as Granite was missing Georges Niang, who is attending the Lebron James Skills Academy in Las Vegas, Nev., from July 9 to July 12.
In Niang’s absence, junior Kourtlin Jackson picked up the slack for Granite, filling the net time and again on his way to 46 points, but it was not enough.
Granite will need to find answers if it hopes to survive long enough for Niang to return for the semifinals and finals, which will be played out the night of July 13.
July 11’s playoff round will kick off with the dunk and 3-point contests at 5:30 p.m.
Phoenix will take on Renaissance for the second consecutive time at 6:45 p.m., while Capital will seek revenge against Coca-Cola in the evening’s final contest, beginning at 8:00 p.m.
All games will be at Valley Southwoods Freshman High School in West Des Moines. Admission is free to the public.
