Multicultural Center hosts FIFA World Cup viewings

2014 FIFA World Cup viewings are being hosted at the Multicultural Center in the Memorial Union everyday of the World Cup. The Multicultural Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. everyday during the week for the summer semester. ISU faculty, students and their families can come to watch the games.
The FIFA World Cup broadcasting is being coordinated by three campus organizations: the Memorial Union, the international students and scholars office and the study abroad office.
Ali Soltanshahi, program coordinator of international students and scholars office, thought that showing the World Cup games would help connect students together and would bring them fun and convenience.
“I wanted to create a space for all ISU students, as well as faculty and staff, to come together and enjoy watching the World Cup,” Soltanshahi said.
George Micalone, assistant director of the Memorial Union, said that they chose to show the games in the Multicultural Center because it has a large television screen and sofas.
Two student supervisors work there everyday and count the number of people who come to watch the game to ensure the room is able to hold the audiences.
Marimar Velaz, junior in apparel, merchandising and design and one of the supervisors of the Multicultural Center, said that there will be around 30 to 40 people watching everyday.
“This place could be very busy when many international students come here to support their national teams,” Velaz said.
Lunch hour is the most popular time student soccer fans come to enjoy the game, Micalone said. Micalone said they try to keep the viewing from getting crazy.
Velaz said the games starting after 5 p.m. are usually not shown, but she asks the students in the Multicultural Center to see if they are still interested in those games.
Micalone said that promoting multicultural connections and international views are the goals of international student programs.
The FIFA World Cup final viewing party, which is going to be organized by the study abroad office, is going to take place in the Maintenance Shop with free food and pop provided starting at 2 p.m. July 13.
