Authorities take ISU alumnus into custody for suspected possession of explosives
June 2, 2014
Ryan Kelly Chamberlain II, a resident of San Francisco and ISU alumnus — who was wanted by the FBI for possession of explosives — has been taken into custody after the FBI received a tip that Chamberlain was spotted at a local bar.
Federal agents and local San Francisco authorities raided Chamberlain’s apartment on the morning of May 31 after obtaining a search warrant as a part of a criminal investigation. After the 14-hour search concluded, a nationwide alert was sent out to all law enforcement asking for help on Chamberlain’s whereabouts.
He was said to be traveling in a 2008 Nissan Altima with either California or Texas plates and was considered to be armed and dangerous during this time.
Earlier Monday afternoon, the FBI deemed Chamberlain no longer an immediate threat and soon received a tip that he had been spotted at a San Francisco bar. The tip was deemed credible and authorities began searching the area.
Shortly after, Chamberlain’s car was found near the Golden Gate Bridge and he was taken into custody.
Chamberlain is a 1993 graduate of Iowa State and studied journalism and political science.
