TV Review: “Game of Thrones”

Jeff Lechner

Wow. What a way to end the episode. I do not think I can honestly say I have ever been in a better mood after watching such a game-changing episode of Game of Thrones. But lets start at the beginning and take it from there.

To kick off the episode we got a look at what’s happened to Theon Greyjoy since last season and it’s not pretty. He has become a complete shell of a person, having been completely broken by Ramsay, and he now answers exclusively to the name Reek which Ramsay gave him last season. Ramsey is still just as sadistic as he was last season as we see him hunting down some poor girl for sport.

We then shift back to King’s Landing where Tyrion enlists the help of Bronn to help his brother Jaime learn to fight left-handed after the loss of his right hand last season. This led to a great scene where we see the two sparring, where as usual Bronn can be counted on to provide some much needed comic relief, which is why he is one my favorite characters. Hopefully we will get to see more scenes between these two throughout the remainder of the season.

Bran Stark and Jojen Reed made their first appearances this season as we saw them north of The Wall, continuing their search for the three-eyed raven. Honestly though this segment was not particularly interesting and, being someone who has not read the books, it is kind of hard to tell where exactly this arc is heading.

The bulk of the episode though was centered on the royal wedding between Joffrey and Margaery. As one might expect, it was a fittingly extravagant affair and it really showcased how much effort goes into the sets on this show. Joffery, as usual, was irritating, cruel and generally unpleasant. In general no one seemed particularly happy and this led to some great back and forth between a lot of characters.

But the big moment, and one that should cause most fans to be absolutely overjoyed, came at the end of the episode. Those who have already seen the episode or read the books probably know to what I am referring. This episode should prove to be a major shake up for things in King’s Landing, as well as leaving some questions as to the fates of some characters as the season continues.
