Dub H spring show features many hip-hop styles

Dub H, Iowa State’s hip-hop club, will perform their spring show “Throwdown” at 7 p.m. on April 25 and April 26 in the Ames City Auditorium.
Based off the movie “Step Up 2,” “Throwdown” features different styles of hip-hop, including urban street and “street battles” between members of the 300-strong group.
“Each dance is group-based, coming in to take over the opposing groups,” said Cody Michael, senior in statistics and president of Dub H. “It’s a wide range of styles, some with deep meaning and others are just people going out to show what they can do.”
Michael explains that many of the members have never danced hip-hop before. Some are members of other dance groups, but most joined for fun. For Michael, it originally started as a way to impress a girl his sophomore year.
“Anyone who wants to dance can dance,” Michael said. “I got into it and made friends. It becomes a family for you”
Preparation for the show begins as early as fall for choreographers like Erin Foley, senior in psychology. Foley joined the group to be able to enjoy her passion and talents.
“I’ve always had a passion for music and dancing,” Foley said. “I just didn’t have a chance to do anything like this before joining Dub H.”
After finishing her work, Foley rehearsed the choreography with a group starting in January to prepare for this show, which both Foley and Michael say is their “bowl game.”
“Having your dance done is an indescribable feeling,” Foley said. “Performing other dances is also rewarding. It’s a great way to expand your horizons.”
The dancers spend 90 minutes a week in Forker Building’s gym preparing with their group for the show. Some are even participating in more than one group.
“For a lot of people, they just want to dance,” Michael said. “Dub H is the kind of thing you never knew you wanted to do.”
Tickets for the show are available from the Hip-Hop Club in the East Office Space of the Memorial Union and through Ames City Auditorium. Limited door tickets will be available until they sell out. The cost is $8 for a single show and $13 for both days. For more information, go to Dub-H’s website.
