ISU softball wins one of three at Texas Tech
April 27, 2014
Going into the weekend, the ISU softball team was 1-8 in Big 12 play.
Iowa State traveled to Texas Tech over to weekend for a three-game series.
Starting off the first game of the series, centerfielder Brittany Gomez had an infield hit, which is her 35th hit of the season.
Texas Tech was not going to let Iowa State get passed them. In just the first inning the Red Raiders had a three-run homerun. After that the bases were loaded and the Red Raiders got ahead 8-0.
The Cyclones would not come back, as they lost the first game of the series 15-0 in only five short innings.
In the second game of the series, the Cyclones came out swinging. In the first inning, sophomore Aly Cappaert hit a ball right to center field to score two runs, bringing in Sarah Hawryluk and Lexi Slater. Iowa State led the first inning 2-0.
Later in the second game, things continued to work for the Cyclones. Cappaert brought in her third run of the game. Jorden Spendlove was right behind her hitting a single bringing in another run. After the third the Cyclones were ahead 6-2.
Cappaert hit a homerun, her 10th of the season. This is the ninth 10-homerun season in ISU history.
Iowa State won the second game 13-7 against Texas Tech.
The last and final game of the series went much differently than the second game for the Cyclones.
Texas Tech started the first inning strong. They got ahead of the Cyclones 2-0.
The Cyclones, however, were not ready to give up yet. Cappaert ran to home reducing the lead for the Red Raiders to 3-1.
Gomez had her 66th hit of the season, tying her hits last season. She is only 11 hits away from Iowa State’s school record which was set by Jenny Condon in 1988 with 77 hits.
This was not enough for the Cyclones, however. The Red Raiders dominated the third and final game winning 10-1 in five innings.
Iowa State is now 2-10 in the Big 12 play while Texas Tech improved to 8-7 in conference play.
The Cyclones take on another Big 12 team in No. 14 Baylor at home next weekend in a three-game series.
