Timeflies Live @ Veishea
April 10, 2014
The pop duo known as Timeflies will be visiting campus April 11 this year to perform at Live @ Veishea.
Together, Rob “Rez” Resnick and Cal Shapiro form the electric duo that is Timesflies. They consider their music to be “electro hip pop dub-something” according to their website. This encapsulates the duo’s style rather well, with fast high-pitched beats that are bound to catch the ears of many college students across the nation.
They began playing together in a funk band from Tufts University in Boston known as The Ride. When this group dispersed, Resnick and Shapiro stuck together. Shapiro kept to doing the vocals and Resnick produces the beats for their songs.
Shapiro takes musical influences from Janis Joplin, Muddy Waters and the Big L. This makes for an interesting mix when Resnick’s beats take influences from Porter Robinson, Pretty Lights and JR Rotem.
In the last few years, the duo’s progress in the music industry has helped them become loved across the United States. Its debut album, “The Scotch Tape,” was released in September 2011 and rose to No. 2 on the iTunes pop chart within the first 24 hours of its release and No. 8 on iTunes overall chart.
The following year brought another chart-topper with the 2012 release of its EP, “One Night,” that crept to No. 1 on the iTunes pop chart and No. 2 overall. The EP also debuted on the Billboard 200 at No. 29 along with the song “Swoon,” which debuted at No. 45. Billboard went on to name them as on of the artists to watch in 2013.
In February 2013, the duo created its own label, Forty8Fifty. It also performed in 2013’s Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago.
Timeflies released its single “I Choose U” in April 2013. Its second EP, titled “Warning Signs,” featured the hit single and was released in October.
Timeflies kicked off 2014 with the debut of a new single “All The Way.” This next year should bring Shapiro and Resnick some great success with their music. To keep it fresh, Shapiro and Resnick release a new track or remix every Tuesday, which has been officially nicknamed “Timeflies Tuesday.”
“I think our fans will definitely find that we still sound like Timeflies, but we’re definitely pushing the limits a little bit further and incorporating more of the electro scene into pop,” said Shapiro in an interview with Teenvogue regarding the new album.
This new release can be found on the Timeflies’ YouTube page. The posts are a mix of different stuff the duo does in the studio. There are some covers of big-name artist singles, such as Nelly’s “Hot in Herre”. There is also a type of freestyle where you see Shapiro pulling little sheets of paper from a shoe that have random words on them. He then includes the words into his rap. The site attracts even more viewers and fans for the duo.
Timeflies has a busy 2014 planned with tour dates all across the nation. After performing for Veishea, it will be on its way out east to perform in Garden City, N.Y., the following day.
