Iowa State saved its best for last, climbing out of the basement of the Big 12 and capturing its first conference win of the season against West Virginia on April 13.
The ISU tennis team (9-13, 1-8 Big 12) beat West Virginia (3-17, 0-9 Big 12) by a score of 5-2, despite losing at both No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles.
The Cyclones captured the doubles point regardless of the loss at the top spot, as they were awarded No. 3 doubles by default. Junior Meghan Cassens and sophomore Ana Gasparovic claimed No. 2 doubles, 8-5.
Junior Ksenia Pronina lost a tight match at No. 1 singles, falling to Hailey Barrett of West Virginia, 6-4, 6-4.
Every other Cyclone won her individual match on the day except for senior Emma Waites, who fell at the No. 5 position by a score of 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Talisa Merchiers, who won at the No. 6 spot by default, claimed her third Big 12 win of the year, ending the conference season with a record of 3-6.
Three Cyclones earned their second Big 12 victories of the season, including freshman Samantha Budai at the No. 2 spot, Cassens at No. 3 singles and Gasparovic at the No. 4 position, who has claimed her two wins in the past two weeks.
Iowa State will receive next weekend off before traveling to Fort Worth, Texas for the Big 12 tournament scheduled for April 24-27.
