National Nutrition Month

Now is the time to celebrate and focus on making smart, nutrient-rich food choices and to develop positive eating and activity habits.  March is the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ (AND) National Nutrition Month. Since 1980, The Academy has dedicated the month of March to educate the public on the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Nutrition awareness is promoted through special events, contests and new, healthy recipes .

The 2014 National Nutrition Month theme, “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right,” focuses on eating well without compromising taste. The theme encourages consumers to spice up their palettes and try unique food and flavor combinations that are both delicious and nutritious.

You can “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right” by not shying away from those oddly named or different colored fruits and vegetables at the grocery store. You could also use new cooking techniques and spices to add a twist to traditional home cooked meals. Instead of boiling the same vegetables night after night, try steaming and adding different spices and herbs to subtly change the flavor profile. Rosemary or garlic can be added for an Italian flavor and cilantro for a Mexican flare.

The theme also encompasses eating foods that are nutrient-rich and provide the most nutrition per calorie consumed. This involves eating foods that you love, but choosing a “healthier” version that won’t alter the flavor. Instead of using full-fat yogurt, try using Greek or low-fat/fat-free yogurt when making a fruit smoothie. Purchase whole grain bread over white bread to make a sandwich that is fiber-rich and hearty.
