Six minutes had ticked off the clock before senior forward Hallie Christofferson made her first shot against Texas Tech. But only 1:08 after her first basket, Christofferson would have seven of Iowa State’s 11 points.

Christofferson went on to outscore the Red Raiders in the first half. She had 17 points before the break while Iowa State held Texas Tech to just 16 points — the lowest score for any of Iowa State’s opponent this season.

The No. 11 ISU women’s basketball team (14-0, 3-0 Big 12) defeated Texas Tech (6-8, 0-3 Big 12) 74-48 on Wednesday. While scoring started slow for the Cyclones, during the final eight minutes of the first half, they went on an 18-0 run.

Texas Tech scored on a layup in the final seconds before halftime to make the score 37-16.

“I think this game we were a lot more focused on the scouting report,” said junior guard Brynn Williamson. “We realized at OU [Oklahoma University] one possession could completely change the game in that overtime win. Attention to detail on every single person was key.”

After Christofferson’s 17-point performance in the opening period, she went on to score five more points in the second. She also had five rebounds and three blocks against the Red Raiders.

“I thought for about 14 minutes literally she was playing by herself. She didn’t get a whole lot of help,” said ISU coach Bill Fennelly. “She was getting beat up pretty good and didn’t panic. I thought some of the other kids panicked a little bit but she kept doing what she needed to do.”

Christofferson averages more than 21 points per game this season. However, her success has not come without recent struggles for Iowa State’s leading scorer.

In a three-game stretch to finish nonconference and begin Big 12 play, Christofferson averaged less than 11 points per game. But in each of the two previous games Christofferson improved to score more than 20 points.

In Iowa State’s overtime win against Oklahoma last Sunday, Christofferson scored her average 21 points again and followed up with a 22-point performance against Texas Tech.

“[I was] just thinking too much,” Christofferson said. “Just thinking myself out of my shot. Just thinking about every little thing instead of just letting it happen.

“It gives you a little bit more confidence when you make you’re first two.”
