Tips to know about utilities

Brittany Gant

When searching for the perfect apartment, one thing to consider is which utilities are included. Utilities are the main essentials to having a functional apartment. Make sure you ask your landlord which are already included in the rent, and don’t be afraid to be specific! It’s important to have an understanding of what utilities you’re responsible for paying and for turning on.

Each apartment includes different things. For example, garbage and water could be included with your rent, but your gas and electric services could be left out as another added service.Keep in mind, the more utilities that are included the less you may have to spend, but the rent might be a tad expensive. If this is your first time living in Ames, lets hope your apartment has good heat! During the winter, the weather can be quite rough!

Don’t forget to ask about extras. This includes phone lines, Internet and cable TV. Once you know what you need, find out who to call. Your landlord should be able to provide the contact information to local utility companies.

Setting Up Utilities

If you need to set up your utilities, contact the new provider at least two weeks before your actual move-in date. Be sure to provide your move-out date too; most companies need a two week notice for disconnection. Just to be safe, it would be wise to book the service the day before you move in, just to make sure the electricity, heat and water are working properly.

Deposit Fees

Each utility company has their own process. In most circumstances, an application needs to be completed. This also includes a security deposit. It’s important to keep in mind startup expenses when you first move in. You may need a deposit to turn on your gas, a deposit to turn on the lights, as well as fees for cable TV and phone services.
