Cyclone Hockey falls to Robert Morris in the first game back from break
January 3, 2014
Returning to action after a two-week hiatus, the Cyclone Hockey team went back to work against Robert Morris on Friday.
The No. 7 Cyclones (23-6-2, 8-3-0 CSCHL) traveled to Chicago on Thursday to take on the No. 2 Eagles (19-3-1, 10-0-3 CSCHL) for a two-game series this weekend. The first game back after break didn’t pan out for Cyclones, as they fell 4-2 to the Eagles on Friday.
Robert Morris jumped up on Iowa State early in Friday’s game, as Eagles forward Gehrett Sargis scored in the first few minutes of the first period. Forward Chris Pontello added to the Eagles’ lead in the first with a breakaway goal.
In the second period, the Cyclones’ offense started to mount a comeback with goals by forwards Alex Grupe and Trevor Lloyd, tying the game at 2-2. But the Eagles re-captured the lead with a power-play goal by Ryan O’Connell near the end of the period.
Eagles forward Oleg Popov added to the Robert Morris’ lead with a goal in the third period. The Cyclones were unable to put the puck in the back of the net in the third and lost 4-2.
Iowa State will get a chance for revenge against Robert Morris at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.
