Movie Review: ‘The Seasoning House’

Released in the U.K. last year, the British horror-thriller film, “The Seasoning House,” is now available to viewers in the United States.

After being kidnapped and having her mother killed by military personal, a girl who is deaf and mute is taken to a place known as “the seasoning house.” The seasoning house is a house that young girls are brought to against their will and are forced to have sex with various military men and mercenaries.

Viktor, the man who runs the seasoning house, deems the girl to be unfit for prostitution given that she is deaf and mute and has a large birthmark on her face. However, Viktor seems to take a real liking to her, and even gives her the nickname “Angel.”

Angel is assigned the task of assisting Viktor to run the place and to take care of the other ladies in the house. Due to strict limitations by Viktor, the girls (with the exception of Angel) must stay in their rooms at all times. Angel becomes good friends with a girl named Violeta.

Sneaky as she is, Angel figures out a way to easily navigate through the house without being noticed. She discovers she is able to crawl through the vents in wall to navigate from room to room. At night, she would sometimes sneak through the vents in order to constantly check up on Violeta.

All is well in the seasoning house (well, sort of) until one day, the very man who had her mother killed shows up in the house. Angel immediately recognizes the man, discovering his name is Goran. This brews up a whole mess of events as Angel has revenge on her mind.

The film take takes place in the Balkans in southeast Europe in the 1990s. This isn’t one of those typical horror films that attempt to scare you through the element of surprise or through supernatural presences. What’s really scary about this film is that the concepts portrayed in this movie actually happened.

It is disgusting to think about, but there are people out there who actually do the things you will see in this movie. It really makes you think about how screwed up some people in the world are.

This film is NOT for the faint of heart. There is much brutality displayed in the movie, and there are parts that will most likely make you cringe.

I enjoyed the film overall, but it was far from perfect. In the scenes with blood, you can obviously tell that the blood was digital. I also thought the movie started a little slow, and seemed hopeless from the beginning, but it gets better; trust me. It’s worth the watch.

Look for it on Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and anywhere where DVD’s or digital downloads are sold.

3.5/5.
