Fans line up early for ISU men’s basketball’s Sunday game against Michigan
November 16, 2013
In sophomore Nick Hinkle’s eyes, ISU men’s basketball isn’t just another sport; it’s a life style.
Hinkle arrived at Hilton Coliseum with a group of friends around noon on Friday in preparation for the Cyclones’ game against No. 7 Michigan at 4 p.m. Sunday. Some might say arriving that early isn’t necessary, but he believes the reward will be worth it.
“We really wanted to be first and get seats in the front row,” Hinkle said. “I mean, with the football team being how they are, basketball is kind of the main focus. We’re trying to just support I guess.”
Hinkle and his friends slept in a tent Friday night, complete with air mattresses and sleeping bags. They also brought a grill, a television and a PlayStation. Coolers full of food and drinks to keep them occupied throughout the night were also brought in.
At game time, the group said they have friends coming to take all of their gear back for them.
While the majority of students won’t be sitting in line for 24 hours or more, Hinkle is confident that they came just in time.
“I think we did all right, timingwise,” Hinkle said. “We’ve heard of people coming at three to just stand in line. But by 8 a.m., I bet the line will be pretty long.”
Hinkle’s group may have been the only one in line at noon on Friday, but by 6 that evening, there were three other tents set up in line.
Brothers Frank and Alan Hayes got in line around 2 p.m. Saturday. Like Hinkle, they too came prepared with tents and snacks.
The brothers also felt the significance of the game on Sunday, and wanted to do their part.
“We wanted to get the front row seats and get on TV,” Hayes said. “It’s a big game, so we wanted to get here early.”
And with all of the hype surrounding the game — like Dick Vitale coming to call the game, and recruit Rashad Vaughn coming on his official visit — these fans are hoping for a little more than just great seats.
“[Dick Vitale] better swing by before the game tomorrow,” said Frank Hayes. “Hopefully he comes by to talk with us. That’d be pretty sweet.”
What are these die-hard fans game predictions? Well, the majority of fans in line felt confident that the Cyclones could come up with the win.
“I think it’ll be a really close game, but because we’re at home, I think we get the win,” Hinkle said. “All the hype with Rashad and Dickie V coming, I think it pushes us past Michigan.”
