GAMER: TCU snatches late win against Cyclones, 21-17

Iowa State fell just shy of a win in the Homecoming game against TCU on Saturday, Nov.9, at Jack Trice Stadium. The final score was 21-17 with a touchdown for the Horned Frogs in the final minute of the game.

The Lowdown 

TCU marched down the field on its last drive 10 plays for 58 yards in 1:58 to leave Jack Trice Stadium with a 21-17 win against Iowa State on Saturday.

The Cyclones drop to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in the Big 12, while TCU jumps to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the Big 12. 

ISU quarterback Grant Rohach earned the start, but he and Sam Richardson split snaps throughout the game. 

Iowa State’s first score came on Richardson’s first play behind center on a 15-yard scramble to the right pylon. The touchdown came after a Kirby Van Der Kamp faked a punt, passing to hit Justin Coleman for 25 yards.

To open the second half, ISU return man DeVondrick Nealy took the kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, marking the first time since 1963 that Iowa State has returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in a season. 

Turning Point

On a potential game-sealing 4th and 1, TCU running back Aaron Green took the ball up the middle on an option-read for 22 yards to the Iowa State 27. From there, TCU was able to run the ball consistently inside the five before punching in the game-winning touchdown. 

TCU took its last drive on a short field 56 yards for a score on 10 plays. 

Van Der Kamp’s punt netted only 17 yards, giving the Horned Frogs a short field to go win the game. 

X Factor

Trevone Boykin – The TCU quarterback only carried the ball five times, but three went for touchdowns, including the game-winning score with 38 seconds remaining from the 1-yard line. 

By The Numbers
