Cyclone Hockey (8-0) won two of two games in its series against Illinois this weekend to remain undefeated this season.
The Cyclones played the Illini on Friday and Saturday to start conference play within the Central States Collegiate Hockey League. Friday’s game ended in a 4-3 shootout win for Iowa State, and Saturday’s game ended with a 3-0 win.
In the first game, Trevor Lloyd put the Cyclones up early in the first period when he put the puck in the back of the net on a power play against the Illini.
But Illini tied the game in the second period with a goal by Austin Bostock and soon they took the lead with a goal by Mike Evans, making it 2-1.
However, Chase Rey’s goal in the final seconds of the second period tied the game for the Cyclones.
The third period finished in a 3-3 tie after goals by Josh Belmont for the Illini and Lloyd for the Cyclones, pushing the game into overtime.
Neither team scored in overtime, drawing the two teams into a shootout. In the third round of the shootout, Lloyd again put the puck in the back of the net for the Cyclones, giving them a 4-3 win.
In the second game, Mike Leskun got the Cyclones rolling. He scored early in the first period to put the Cyclones up 1-0.
The sticks were quiet for both teams in the second period so heading into the third period the Cyclones remained up 1-0.
In the third period, the Cyclones added two more goals to their lead to make the final score 3-0 and sweep the Illini.
ISU goalie Matt Cooper was perfect on the night, saving 19 of 19 shots on goal.
