Netflix Review: Russell Peters’ ‘Notorious’
October 23, 2013
In front of a live audience in Sydney, Russell Peters performs his new stand-up special, “Notorious.” It is another one of many stand-up comedy exclusives available through Netflix’s streaming service.
Peters is a native of Toronto, where he originally started his comedic career before expanding elsewhere. He has performed in dozens of countries worldwide.
Peters’ show has a much different feel than other comedians. For some it might be a good thing, and for others, it might be a bad thing. As for myself, I found it to be a very bad thing.
Watching the show, Peters gave me the impression that he was not well prepared for it. Whether that is true or not is beyond me since this was my first time listening to Peters.
Many of his jokes were racial and others were plain immature. There was no sense of creativity or intelligence either. It also felt like he tended to drag his jokes out, making them very dry. Sometimes he would even take the time to explain his jokes, which completely takes the humor out of them.
At some points, Peters would point out random audience members and have a conversation with them, which really felt like a waste of time to me. It is nice when comedians interact with the audience, but that should not be a huge portion of the show.
There were a few chuckles here and there, but overall it was not very funny to me. I would not bother wasting your time with this one, as there are many other stand-up shows out there that will be much more entertaining.
1/5.
