TV reivew: ‘House of Cards’
September 18, 2013
Whether or not you are really into political shows, “House of Cards” is a great series to start watching. This is one of those series you can easily fall into a state of watching episode after episode without even realizing it.
Based in present day Washington D.C., this dramatic thriller will most likely exceed any expectations you set for it. The show is based on the novel by Michael Dobbs of the same name.
When Frank Underwood (played by Kevin Spacey) is overlooked for the appointment to secretary of state, Frank starts to become angry upon finding out because the position was promised to him. He is instead asked to keep his current position in Congress because it’s where they “need him most.” Instead of losing his temper and throwing a fit, Frank has something else in mind. He decides to plot his revenge against those who had forsaken him, including the newly elected president in particular.
Frank is an inexplicable man with a hidden agenda. Most of the time, you have no idea what he’s going to be doing next. While Frank does frequently talk into the camera to tell you what is going on, you never really get any of the full details. That’s why it’s electrifying to see what Frank has in store each episode. The series really captures your attention right from the start, and maintains your attention throughout. It is one of the finer original series’ that Netflix has to offer.
Out of the collective 14 emmy nominations for Netflix original series, “House of Cards” pulled in an impressive nine of those nominations. Two resulted in wins, one for outstanding cinematography for a single-camera series, and the other for outstanding casting for a drama series. Season 2 of House of Cards is currently in the works and is expected in February 2014.
