TV Review: ‘Hemlock Grove’
September 9, 2013
“Hemlock Grove” is an interesting TV series to say the least, but it also has some downsides.
Set in the fictional town of Hemlock Grove, Penn., the show begins by following the murder of a local teenage girl by something or someone unknown. Her body is then discovered in the woods south of Hemlock Grove. The police initially believe that her death was the result of a wild animal attack, but that doesn’t stop the townspeople from pointing fingers to whom they believe murdered the girl.
The Emmy-nominated horror-thriller television series is based on the novel by Brian McGreevy. The novel was released on March 27, 2012, and it wasn’t long after the release that the TV series started filming. Initially streaming, the show was first available on Netflix on April 13. It stars Famke Janssen, Bill Skarsgard, Landon Liboiron, Dougray Scott, Penelope Mitchell, and Freya Tingley.
What I liked about “Hemlock Grove” was it left plenty of room for imagination, which is great thing is considering the type of series it is. But like I said before, this show does have its cons as well. After watching the first five minutes of the pilot episode, I felt like this was really going to live up to the label of a thriller. It wasn’t long after that I was feeling bored and confused by the plot. It seems as though they save the most exciting parts of the show for the beginning and the ending, while the rest feels like it’s just filler.
The plot really tends to jump around quite a bit, and you have to pay extra close attention to realize what is going on. Although I thought it was a decent series, I didn’t feel like it really made me want to keep watching episode after episode like other series out there. As for being labeled as a horror series, I thought the show was more creepy than scary. There’s no elements of shock or anything jumping out and scaring you, but there are some pretty disgusting and vulgar scenes in the show. The music did a good job of adding a touch of creepiness as well.
“Hemlock Grove” has already been renewed for a second season, although it’s still uncertain when the new season will be available on Netflix.
