Iowa State’s Greek community consists of many different fraternity and sorority chapters, each of which are unique but also devoted to helping the Iowa State and Ames communities.

Fraternities are the Greek houses for men and they do their recruiting throughout the summer. However, students interested in joining a fraternity can visit different chapters throughout the year and talk to the current members. Sororities are the Greek houses for women and they do their recruiting for a week before school starts in the fall.

Joining the Greek community is a great way to meet American students, make new friends, get help with your studies and give back to the community. It also provides students with the chance to gain leadership experience.

Philanthropy

Both fraternities and sororities are very philanthropic in that they volunteer their time and money to help both local and national causes. As defined by the Greek Affairs website, philanthropy is “the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.” Some of the causes at ISU are Greeks Give Back, Polar Bear Plunge, Can Sculpture Contest and Greek Trick-or-Treat.

Academics

The Greek community strives to maintain high scholarship and academic excellence among its members. In order to do so, many resources are available such as study partners, networking, advisers and improvement programs. Chapters also help with funding for tutors and some of the upperclassmen can serve as mentors.

Traditions

Iowa State takes pride in its many traditions, as does the Greek community. Some of the traditions of Iowa State’s Greek community include Greek Fest, Greek Week, Dance Marathon, Yard Shows, Yell Like Hell, Varieties and, last but not least, Veishea.
