Iowa State offers many things to its students: a world-class education, a beautiful campus and top-of-the-line athletics. Year round, Iowa State holds sporting events going on that students may attend.

Some sports that Iowa State offers are football, men’s and women’s basketball, track and field, tennis, golf, gymnastics, wrestling and volleyball.

Fall sports

• Football (American): This sport is played by two teams with 11 players. The players try to run or pass the ball down the field to the end zone. When a team reaches the end zone, they score what is called a touchdown.

• Volleyball: This sport is played by two teams with six players separated by a net. The goal is to ground the ball on the other team’s side in order to score.

• Soccer: This sport is played by two teams with 11 players. The object is to kick the ball into the goal without the goalkeeper blocking it.

• Men’s Golf: This sport is an individual sport in which players compete against each other to get their ball into the hole in as few strokes as possible. The players hit the ball down a path called the fareway. The whole is positioned on what is called the green. Certain clubs are used to hit the ball depending on the trajectory the players want the ball to have.

Winter sports

• Basketball: This sport is played by two teams with five players. The goal is to get to the other side of the court and put the ball through the basket, which consists of a hoop with an open net attached to it.

• Gymnastics: This sport is a performance by the athletes to show strength, flexibility, agility, coordination and balance through various exercises.

• Wrestling: This sport is a combat sport between two athletes that uses a grappling technique.

Spring sports

• Track and field: This sport is played by athletes as they run, jump and throw.

• Cross country: This sport is played by runners who run in open air on natural terrain that includes both flat areas and hills and curves.

• Women’s golf: This sport is played the same as the men’s golf, just during a different season.

At Iowa State, the athletics are one of the things that bring the campus community together. The teams represent more than champions on field or court.

Income students should find out when and where their favorite sport is being played. It’s a great way to meet new people and cheer on the Cyclones.
