Greg Tylka, a professor of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, repaired the mirror on his his son’s motorized scooter, parked it and received a ticket from the ISU Parking Department, just 45 minutes before an SUV crashed into it, smashing the front end of the scooter.
Justin Tylka, a junior in psychology at ISU, started his summer classes at Iowa State on Monday morning. His father got the motorized scooter repaired for him at a repair shop earlier Monday morning, then parked on Stange Rd., between Kildee Hall and Lagomarcino Hall.
A Mercury Mariner hit Tylka’s scooter, before veering off the road and into a tree next to Lagomarcino Hall.
“The driver suffered a medical condition, and the passenger of the vehicle reached over and stopped the car,” said a firefighter from the Ames Fire Department. There were only two people in the car.
Traffic was not stopped, and the conditions of the driver and the passenger are unknown.
