When ISU men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg agreed to a new contract in late March he accepted a larger buyout, according to the 16-page contract released Tuesday.

As part of his 10-year, $20 million contract that runs through the 2023 season, Hoiberg will face a buyout of $2 million if he chooses to leave for another Division I head coaching position and $500,000 if he leaves for a position in the NBA. The buyout for any other position in Hoiberg’s previous contract was $500,000.

Hoiberg was hired in April 2010 following the departure of Greg McDermott. The Cyclones have made the NCAA tournament in the last two seasons, going 2-2 in postseason play.

Prior to agreeing to a new contract in March, Hoiberg had reportedly drawn interest from other schools and the NBA. Now he hopes to remain in Ames as long as Iowa State wants him.

“I’ll hopefully be here as long as they want me,” Hoiberg said in an interview in April.
