CyGuide: Student Union Board (SUB) plans entertainment for students
May 30, 2013
As a new school year begins, getting involved is always a good idea. Student Union Board (SUB) is an organization that will help you meet people, gain valuable experience and build your resume.
Within the past five years, SUB has expanded multiple programs including its national events program, which has brought in acts such as Lupe Fiasco, Brantley Gilbert and Passion Pit.
“SUB is a university-wide entertainment group that plans events for students. It’s planned by students for students,” said George Micalone, director of student activities. “For students, just being able to be a part of an organization that brings in cool, relevant entertainment isn’t something you can just walk up to in the real world.”
Micalone encourages students to get involved with the group early in their college careers because it takes time to understand how the group operates.
“Look at George Potter for example, he got involved when he was a freshman,” Micalone said. “He really put himself out there, helped at a lot of events, became a director right away and he’s making a good impression on the organization just as a sophomore.”
Micalone also said there are some members who get involved as juniors or seniors, just like SUB’s current president, Marissa Griffith.
“I transferred here the end of my sophomore year and changed my major to events management,” Griffith said. “While looking around campus for ways to get involved, I found SUB.”
After being the volunteer coordinator for the national events committee during the Brantley Gilbert concert, she was asked to apply for the position of president.
Griffith said SUB is a great opportunity to meet people who are different.
“I think it’s just a really great way to meet people, there’s also huge diversity in our group,” Griffith said. “There isn’t a specific mold of people that are in SUB it’s just a lot of different kids.”
When all the planning and preparation pays off and the event is over, Griffith said that feeling knowing you helped plan that event is worth the effort.
“It’s always fun to see hard work pay off,” Griffith said. “I think anybody enjoys that. Anybody could join and love SUB because you’re seeing your hard work pay off.”
