The ISU softball team defeated UMKC 10-4 in the first game of Monday’s doubleheader in Ames.
The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Cyclones (20-29, 4-11 Big 12).
After falling behind 1-0 on a fielder’s choice in the first inning, the Cyclones got on the board with three runs in the second inning from the back end of the batting order. Freshman Aly Cappaert picked up an RBI double from the eighth spot in the order before being hit in by a two-run homer off the bat of sophomore Maddie Reese.
The Kangaroos (16-23, 5-6 Summit) tied the game at 3-3 with two runs of their own in the fourth inning off the bats of freshmen Alexandra Friloux and Maddie Garton.
Iowa State immediately regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Alex Tinaglia scored on a fielder’s choice, giving the Cyclones the 4-3 lead before UMKC tied the game once again in the top of the fifth.
The Cyclones put the Kangaroos away for good in the bottom of the sixth with an explosive inning behind a solo home run from Cappaert and a grand slam from sophomore Lexi Slater.
ISU senior Tori Torrescano pitched her way to a complete game victory, going all seven innings while allowing four earned runs on eight hits and two walks.
